The soundtrack from Woman on Top, starring Madrid-born bombshell Penelope Cruz as the beauty and brains behind a popular cooking show, is the perfect introduction to the Brazilian sound--and just might live up to the label's promise that it's "destined to bring Bossa Nova music to the world" (though bossa nova has long been popular in the West, albeit in specialized circles). The highly listenable album features contemporary Brazilian artists such as singer-songwriter Lenine; pop-rocker and Joao Gilberto sound-alike Paulinho Moska; and the three-DJ collective Bossa Cuca Nova putting a new spin on a classic Geraldo Pereira tune. It also includes gems such as Maria Creuza and her delicately wavering voice, and guitarist Dori Caymmi performing one of his father's songs. Mellow yet upbeat, it's relaxation music that won't put you to sleep. --Jamie FitzGerald

5.0 out of 5 stars I never buy soundtracks, but this is just too good..., October 24, 2000

This is the first soundtrack I've ever purchased and I can't stop listening to it! The music has a relaxing beat with guitar and vocals that have a deep, buttery feel. There isn't a bad track on this disk, though I'm partial to "A Flor E O Espinho" and the haunting and alluring female voice of Maria Creusa as she sings "Obsessao". I also enjoyed the playful beat and vocals of "Falsa Baiana." It has introduced an entirely new category of music to me; I've even begun looking for CDs by the artists appearing on this soundtrack. I enjoyed the movie, though I don't speak a word of Portugese, and I had a craving for two things when I left the theatre: spicy seafood dishes and this soundtrack!

4.0 out of 5 stars ON TOP OF GREAT MUSIC, September 17, 2000

I recently attended a screening of this film in Chicago, and the music was by far the most effective and enjoyable part of the experience. The Brazilian rythyms and general cheerful, soulful and sensual feel of the music heightened the drama and comedy of the film considerably. If you're a fan of film music in general, you definitley must add this to your collection; if you're not, this is the kind of music you'd play on a romantic or relaxing evening.

Fully realized while watching the movie, Woman on Top, how much music means to the enjoyment of a film. The pleasant sounds from this film, which are also essential elements of the plot will be long remembered by this viewer. And now that I have purchased the CD, I can't stop listening to it nor dancing to the wonderful songs.
