True Believer features the prime of his work: recordings for Rykodisc (solo and as part of Buick MacKane), tracks he recorded for EMI as part of True Believers plus highlights from the magnificent trilogy of albums he recorded for Bloodshot Records. Escovedo refuses to be easily labeled and True Believer show how he's blended a myriad of influences to create his own unique musical voice. Nascente.

A compilation with more than 2 hours of music under the guise of a "best of" does not always represent the best value if the selection is ill- considered or poorly programmed. This is neither. I've always been in two minds about Alejandro Escovedo, at times thinking that his music matches the real life poignancy and lack of pretension of my other songwriter hero, Townes Van Zandt, at other times his music failing to move me.

Listening again to this selection, which I picked up recently in Sydney, I have no idea why my ambivalence prevailed for so long. His canon is one of the most consistently brilliant of the alt country genre. There is a hint in the second disc of my predicament though. When he rocks out, he is a different musician. Not necessarily an inferior or better one, just one that could be categorized entirely differently. I adore his balladry. These songs (mostly on the first disc) are minted first class.
