Summary: Sweet, cookin' tracks 2003-05-12
Comment: This CD was my first introduction to Karrin Allyson - I found it in a bargain bin, which turned out to be a travesty as this is a great album. The faster tracks (especially 'One Note Samba'and 'Yeh Yeh') are witty and agile, but it's the ballads that distinguish this from the others. I haven't heard many more soulful versions of 'I Cover the Waterfront' or 'Dindi', and Ellington's classic 'In A Sentimental Mood' receives wistful treatment here. With a great band (including New Zealand's own Alan Broadbent on piano!), clever arrangements, and Allyson's straight-forward, no-fuss yet dolcissimo voice, this CD will be oft-played if you like your jazz served clean and accessible.

Summary: Beautiful phrasing 2001-02-15
Comment: I first heard Karrin Allyson on Piano Jazz on NPR. I didn't get the her name at first, so I spent the next three weeks trying to figure out who she was.I was so impressed with her voice that I bought a portable CD player and a car adopter just so I could listen to this album at my work and in my car. She has a sweet voice, but her phrasing is exquisite. Because of her, my 9 year old son has become a jazz fan, and "Yeh Yeh" is one of his favorite tracks.
