Pafuera Telaranas, the debut disc from Spanish singer Bebe, spins a hypnotic web of alternately moody and joyous pop treats. The album doesn't immediately catch fire after initial listens, but Bebe's playful delivery and thoughtful lyrics ultimaltey shine through. They make Pafuera Telaranas an enjoyable alternative to so many of Latin pop's kewpie-doll cuties. The album flirts with ska rhythms ("Ska de la Tierra"), hushed balladry (the mournful "Cuidandote") and experimental a capella interludes ("Razones"). Bebe's chirpy vocals anchor each song, a mix of Juleta Venegas' weary sensuality and Gwen Stefani's streetwise sweetness. Bebe even seems to channel Ashlee Simpson's raspy rock flavor during "Con Mis Manos"--although the acclaimed singer would likely frown on the comparison. "Malo," a harrowing, flamenco-flavored tale of domestic abuse, is the album's emotional centerpoint. It builds to an impressive climax. Equally enjoyable, but alternately joyous, is "Siete Horas," a wistful countdown to a lovers' meeting stuffed with DJ scratches and rapid-fire vocal tricks. Bebe proves adept at adapting herself to diverse themes and styles, and it makes Pafuera Telaranas an inspired pop treat. --Joey Guerra

Comment: Amazon's five stars cannot do justice to Bebe's Pafuera Telaranas, an album that deserves six stars. I cannot listen to this album without it effecting me emotionally. One song makes me want to cry and the next one makes we want to date her. She rails against abuse. She expressively describes making love and thinking about making love. Bebe touches on subjects that few Spaniards would. Themes like "thinking of you with my hand", "taking advantage of a stranger sleeping in the park to satisfy a curiosity for the taste of 'honey'" "the yearning of her vagina that can only be cured by his thing," and so on. Despite the fact that this work is explicit, its subject matter is handled as art and spoken as only a woman could speak it. I highly recommend this album, but if you speak Spanish, I suggest not listening to it at work, as your mind will wander.

Summary: Not what I excpected 2007-08-10
Comment: I first heard Bebe on the Putumayo Latin Lounge album. I always like to buy the artists' original recordings, but I must say that this one disappointed me a bit. Too electronic and aggressive for me. And some of the songs just keep going on and on and on... No thanks.

Comment: bebe definetly has a unique sound. I only understand a little bit of what she is saying but I still like to listen to it. The spanish is a little different because she is from Spain

Comment: bebe has a wonderful childish voice that I find very attractive.
the lyrics need some revising, for some are simply silly, and not the silly that can be fun, but the silly that is plain dumb.
nevertheless, it is still worth buying the cd
