Luiz Bonfa never quite reached the dizzying commercial heights of Antonio Carlos Jobim or Joao Gilberto. Regardless, Bonfa's contributions to the bossa-nova movement were, arguably, just as important. He worked steadily in America, released more than 50 albums, toured with singer Mary Martin and wrote several Brazilian film scores. The composer and guitarist died in 2001, but his work continues to make an impact. This edition of Le Roi De La Bossa Nova compiles that original 1962 album and the 1963 EP En direct du Bresil, and the songs flow together seamlessly. It's an intimate, inviting mix. Casual vocals and precise instrumentation make for a sun-kissed jaunt through the world of bossa nova, anchored by Bonfa's impeccable guitar work. Summary: Really great Bonfa album 2007-07-30
Comment: It's been only two years I listen to Bossa Nova music and I always go back to this one. This is a very basic studio recording, clean sound with no reverb, and quite well mastered for this CD edition. The emphasis of the recording is on the impressive "doigté" and virtuosity of this guitar giant, as we can see on the photo cover. I find this album better than "Luiz Bonfa plays Bossa Nova" on Verve which has too much orchestration and arrangments. On "Le roi de la Bossa Nova" it's mostly guitar, voice and some flute and percussion (except Cantiga Da Vida and the 4 bonus tracks). Superbe & délicieux!
