Latin Lullaby

These new and classic lullabies from Mexico, Brazil, Spain, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Cuba and Argentina will ease your little ones to sleep. Their romantic, mystical, and playful nature reflect an essential part of the Latin soul.

From simple whimsical songs passed down from mother to mother in the oral tradition, to virtuostic performances of the classics by Bola Denieve and Atahualpa Yupanqui, these cradle songs contain the styles and influences that have made Latin music the vibrant, ever-evolving phenomenon that it is today.

Including contributions from Tex-Mex power folkie Tish Hinojosa, Cuban opera diva Clara Alonso, and Nelie Lebrón Robles, lead singer of Paracumbé, an Afro-Puerto Rican outfit, Latin Lullaby is a richly moving encounter with dream-inducing tunes sung in Spanish. Drawing on the relatively new folk customs of Latin America, this collection features elegant guitar noodling, classical orchestration, a cappella intimacy, and straight-ahead guitar and voice lullaby, as on "Duermete Mi Nino" ("Sleep My Child"), Venezuela's national anthem. Also present are progressively traditional ballads of parental love and protection, adult concerns, and gently rootsy narratives detailing the everyday responsibilities of child rearing. The latter is exemplified by Mili Bermejo's "La Cuna de Tu Hijo" ("The Cradle of Your Child"), in which a proud papa labors over crafting a customary baby bed, as well as by Cuban pop star Xiamantha Laugart's cheeky medley about a mother's negligence and a dancing baby. --Paige La Grone

As an educator planning to raise my children bilingually, I was very happy to discover this CD. My collection of materials would not be complete without it. It is absolutely beatiful and I can't wait to sing along to many of these songs to put my little one to sleep. I find listening to it now (baby is on the way) very soothing and would actually recommend it to anyone who wants to add traditional music in Spanish to their collection. This album is easy to listen to again and again.

Helpful to note: In addition to the songs sung in Spanish (some are quite beautifully sung in dialects specific to the country represented), the album has 1 song in Portuguese and 3 are instrumental. The liner notes give information about the artist and often the song. Also included is an English translation.

While this is my favorite lullaby CD, I would also recommend María del Rey's "Lullabies of Latin America".

I don't speak Spanish or even have kids, but I'm totally entranced by this album.

I first heard it nearly six years ago when a friend was expecting her first child. Songs like `A la Nanita Nana' & `El Negrito Com/Al Nino le Gusta el Son' left me transfixed - - so much so that I had to buy a copy just for my 30-year-old music loving self!

Totally genuine, not slick and "packaged" sounding like some of the other kids' (or adults', for that matter) recordings I've heard, this music is wonderfully soothing and engaging. Filled with haunting and beautiful melodies, rich and affecting vocals, deep emotion, and excellent musicianship. The passing of time has not dimmed my appreciation one iota, it's still as fresh and powerful today as it was on first listen.

The fact that these are lullabies is mostly irrelevant to me, it's just great music. :)

Highly recommended for everyone.
