Product Review

The Tigres' masterpiece, this two-CD set is the finest single album in modern norteño music. The corrido (ballad) is the heart of norteño, and this is a sophisticated exploration of the themes that have made the Tigres masters of modern corrido. The title song ("Boss of Bosses" in English) sets the mood with its suggestion of a mafia capo controlling everything from the government to the press; and other pieces plumb the drug world on both sides of the border, with less shooting and more subtlety than previous narcocorrido (drug ballad) discs. Other songs explore the immigrant experience and life in rural Mexico. Unlike most Mexican records, the set includes a lyric book (Spanish only). --Elijah Wald

Great bands are able to capture the essence of a culture through music, even more so if they deal with some of the seedier aspects of that culture. Los Tigres del Norte have always been able to capture "real life" of los traficantes - drug traffickers on the US/Mexican border. Jefe de Jefes, however, is my favorite as the songs literally put you on the border as a traficante, battling with the good, the bad, and the ugly. Starts out nicely with a sort of 'in your face' song about being the big boss (Jefe de Jefes - Boss of the Bosses). Then winds its way though issues closer to home like Las Novias del Traficante (Girlfriends of Trafficers) and El Prisionero (The Prisoner) before throwing in a nice political tune in El General (The General) - the irony of the US stamping out the drug trade even as our citizens pay any price to get these very drugs.

Outstanding album all the way around.

The banda scene is just too saturated and unoriginal these days, there is too much garbage in this genere, however,LOS TIGRES DEL NORTE are an exception! They are the voice for mexican immigrants! The lyrics are smart, and real! The music is fresh, while still being 100% mexican grupera!"mis dos patrias"is an awsome song about his 2 dear lands....also "el prisionero" is great!I 'd reccomend this and also the old tigres recordings!
