Album Description
Hecho en Casa Part 1 is the first album release in a forthcoming series that documents Afronaut from Bugz in the Attic's personal discovery of the Caribbean Island of Puerto Rico, its people, and most importantly of all, it's rich musical culture. Along the way he learns about Puerto Rico's very own Bomba & Plena rhythms, meets and mixes with some of the good and the great of P.R.'s music greats including the likes of Giovanni Hildago, Cachete, Hector Calderon and Totin. During Afronaut's various trips and year of living in San Juan, he invited various musical friends and colleagues over to join him on the beautiful island. They too were completely taken with the Island's spirit and have all thrown into this unique musical melting pot. None more so than Mark de Clive-Lowe, whose version of "Relax & Unwind" which originally appeared on Dego's 2000 Black album The Good Good Part 2 and was then licensed by New York's Masters At Work and given a U.S. release as a 12" on their own label. The version on this album sees the track stripped back to Abdul Shyllon's original vocal and given the full live Puerto Rican treatment that proves irresistible. Other visiting collaborators include I. G. Culture as Tito Sensai. Seiji, an original Bug, and current producer of Rosin Murphy, this time under the guise of Oreja and Neon Phusion with "Calle San Sebastian". Afronaut (feat. Son de Batey) comes with a rework of the Puerto Rican classic "Golpe Tuyo Calinda" which has already become an anthem at London's Notting Hill Carnival. Other P.R. homegrown talents come in the shape of Local 12 "Kulo" and Candella Allstars "Brobombique" & "Mambo Roto" with further twists and remixes supplied from the likes of Landslide and Kay Suzuki. It's this kind of culture clash that make this album a unique document, only this time West London went to the Caribbean.
