This highly acclaimed 1997 musical meeting between rising American trumpet star, Roy Hargrove, and a collection of Cuban musicians including Chucho Valdes, founder of Irakere, is indeed a fine piece of music making. Given the politics of our times, much was made of the rapprochement between Cuban and American musicians. However, if you approach it expecting to hear something like most contemporary Cuban dance or popular music, you may initially be disappointed. The Cuban influence is subtle rather than blatant; the dominant flavor comes from the jazz tradition. But let it work its magic on you over a few listens and the inner strengths of the two styles become entwined, the sophistication of the vision will transport you to some place where only music, and not politics, matter. These musicians work together like the fingers on your hand. --Jonathan E.

Summary: not a group 2003-10-09
Comment: This recording has some merit, but as a whole, it is not very cohesive. It is obvious that these are capable musicians, but it's also obvious that they had not spent any real time playing together before this recording session. It is loaded with weak spots both in time, and melodic thought. Lacking direction and common musical goals, it is pretty insipid, and leaves me feeling I've wasted my time with it. Throughout most of the tracks, the players resort to playing loudly what they are used to playing, and very little communication takes place. Sometimes it sounds like very little listening to each other is happening, or that maybe they were having a hard time hearing each other.
Good players.....Bad setting.....mediocre music.

Summary: dope jazz 2002-12-22
Comment: Ive long been a fan of latin jazz, but this album is so good that it made me bored with my collection. The complex beats, the powerful soloing, the wide range of moods in the songs and the genereal arc of the album: all make 'Habana' utterly, utterly compelling. The best jazz recording ive heard in years.
'Habana' starts off slow, but by track 7 [mountaings] you pulse will be pounding.
its dope.

Summary: Latin Jazz at its finest 2001-12-19
Comment: In modern times, it is rare to hear a Latin Jazz album of this quality. Roy Hargrove has taken his traditional jazz trumpet and flugelhorn chops and adapted them to work with Cuban rhythms. The mix is spectacular, and the artists chosen to work on the album couldn't be better. Everything was recorded in Cuba, with a majority Cuban group, and it shows in the quality of the music. This is a must-have album for any jazz enthusiast.

Summary: LATIN JAZZ AT ITS FINEST 2000-09-23
Comment: Roy Hargrove and his all start cast are a bunch of cats in this album. If you are a jazz fan and don't own this album then you better go and get it right now. Hands down one of the best modern jazz albums of our time. You without a doubt will not regert it. I will put my personal guarantee on it. There is a reason why this album received 5 stars. Good day.
