On this release, Kansas City-based vocalist Karrin Allyson embraces romantic classics from both French and Brazilian perspectives. While this is not the first time Allyson has recorded in Portuguese or French, this disc showcases her multicultural impulses with a cozy elegance. Using talented backing musicians, including keyboard players Gil Goldstein and Paul Smith, Allyson covers splendid compositions by the likes of Jacques Brel, Brazil's Caetano Veloso, and America's most notorious jazz expatriate, Bud Powell. On "Plasir d'Amour (The Pleasure of Love)," Allyson's lilting vocals are flawlessly embellished by Rod Fleeman's acoustic guitar and Bob Bowman's bass, as well as an understated string quartet. A wholly mature effort from one of our brightest young voices, From Paris to Rio is a swinging travelogue in song. --Mitch Myers

Summary: Amazing repertoire, courage to sing in portuguese, good arrangements, a job well done 2007-08-27
Comment: Karrin Allyson is a really nice suprise, specially considering her effort and the courage to sing in portuguese ( her french is without a doubt much better, maybe because portuguese is much harder than french, for sure... ) but singing bossa nova to those who are not brazilians and not used to samba ( I mean, for those who did not grow up with samba or bossa nova playing arround since childhood... ) is really hard, needs courage and dedication, and she shows that for the whole album and does it really well. Considering the beat, the lyrics and what is called "batida diferente" she did a great job.

Brazilian music is one of the best of all in the world, without a doubt, bossa nova is a mix of jazz and samba ( that explains a lot ) and Karrin Allyson, has the guts not only to sing bossa nova but also Brazilian Popular Music, like "Catavento e Girassol" from Guinga ( one of the best guitar players - the best recording of this song is from Leila Pinheiro in a disc named after this very song ) Coracao Vagabundo and all the others have the bossa nova beat. ( In case you like to compare her recordings to original ones I would suggest singers like Elza Soares ( for O Pato - or the duck ), or Gal Costa ( Coracao Vagabundo ), and Elis Regina ( Inutil Paisagem - Useless Landscape ) to get a flavor of how those songs sound with brazilian singers and to see that Karrin Allyson did a nice job.

As a brazilian and as a musician this is great to hear and allow me to say ( I love Sinatra but he did an album of Jobim's songs ) not even Sinatra dived himself that deeply in portuguese music, singing in Brazil's language. Many Thanks to Karrin Allyson for make the record. You can't get tired of listening to it.

The song called "o Barquito" should be written as "O barquinho" - that's the real name and that's how it should be written in portuguese ( what's in the CD page is written in spanish... all wrong... )

Summary: She is the whole package! 2006-03-10
Comment: Ms. Allyson's breakout album is a real showcase of all of her many virtues. Her diction is excellent and she shows a real flair for interpretation in every language. I agree with another listener that her Brazilian songs are very special. She is a rare vocalist who can keep her jazz credentials in balance with her ability to convey popular songs. It is too bad that she didn't have the "A" Team in post production. While the instruments are well miked, someone made the decision that she needed reverb/echo on each song. It adds nothing to her magnificent voice and calls attention to itself as you try to concentrate on her work. Still worth having in your collection.

Summary: My .02 cents 2004-05-10
Comment: I don't usually write online reviews but after buying this CD, I must say that I love it from beginning to end. The first song I heard from this CD was "My Little Boat" while listening to a local jazz station. I wrote down her name and the title of the song so I could look her up later and I'm glad I did. After listening to a few samples online, I went out on a limb and purchased this CD. I can play it from beginning to end without any skipping. IT'S THAT GOOD! I'm no jazz expert but her voice is so clear and her pitch is right on. This album totally transports me away from the stress of living in the city and relaxes me whenever I need to "get away" but can't. Her voice is like silk!
