Comment: I bought this CD mainly because it features my favorite tenor saxophone player, Hank Mobley. I was also familiar with Kenny Drew and the work of drummer Elvin Jones. When I first listened to it, nothing really seemed to stand out about this session, but repeated listening have revealed that while not a barn-burner, this is a quite solid set. There's nothing really jaw-dropping here, just tight performances from all the players involved. Kenny Drew is quickly becoming one of my favorite jazz pianists, and the two titles he contributes as a writer are both excellent, particularly "Ad-Dis-Un". "Farmer's Market" boasts excellent work from both horn players. This was my first experience with Art Farmer, and I found him to be a very mellow, tasteful trumpet player with tone that sets the mood for the whole session. He's not quite as fiery as a Freddie Hubbard or Donald Byrd here, but that doesn't seem to be what this material calls for. The two ballads without Mobs are very elegant, with beautiful work by Drew and Farmer. Mobley returns to the fold for the rollicking "Wailin' with Hank", which closes out the album. I think most of the performers here have turned in more dynamic work on other releases I've heard, but I still found this album very enjoyable, but to me some of the playing never reaches the explosive level some of these performers are capable of. That doesn't make this a weak album by any stretch of the imagination, just perhaps not as good as others by the same musicians.

Summary: Great Pre-Jazztet Farmer 2007-09-09
Comment: "Farmer's Market" is a great early look at the trumpeter who co-founded the classic Jazztet with Benny Golson. Art Farmer is joined on this excellent November 1956 set by his brother Addison on bass, Hank Mobley on tenor sax, Kenny Drew on piano and Elvin Jones on drums. The album boasts five original compositions (two by Drew, and one each by Art, Mobley and Art's friend and frequent collaborator Gigi Gryce), and the standard "By Myself." While this is a memorable session, my reason for withholding a fifth star is the disc is not quite as strong as either When Farmer Met Gryce or Modern Art (see my reviews), which are both uncontested five-star outings. With that being said, it is still well worth your while to shop at the "Farmer's Market."
