On Dreamer, São Paulo-born, Manhattan-based pianist Eliane Elias performs bossa novas and brush-stroked ballads by North and South American composers from Johnny Mercer to Antonio Carlos Jobim. This project is a sort of musical homecoming for Elias, who once worked with bossa nova pioneer Vinicius de Moraes. Elias's pretty pianisms complement her breathy Portuguese/English contralto, especially on the '60s hit "Call Me," "Photograph (Fotografia)," and "So Nice (Samba de Verão)." Elias's two compositions, "Movin' Me On" and "Time Alone," can be considered smooth-jazz-friendly, but the Bahia bounce of "Doralice"--where Elias quotes Stan Getz's well-known tenor solo--and her instrumental rendering of Burt Bacharach's "A House Is Not a Home" are highlights of this masterpiece of soft syncopation. Rob Mathes's elegant, Claus Ogerman-style string arrangements enhance the mood. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Summary: She's the real deal...... 2008-10-27
Comment: I have recently become a big fan of Eliane (already big fan of Diana Krall), purchasing her most recent Bill Evan's tribute album. But back to this album, I absolutely love this album, Eliane's voice is so soothing, her phrasing so fine, even when she sings in her native language, it just carries you along.I tear up every time I listen to "That's All", as it embodies exactly what I would like to say to my special someone. You really can't go wrong with this album. The string arrangements are top notch, and Eliane's piano really shines through on "A house is not a home". I will go further in saying, almost any album of Eliane's will have some jewels on it. This one has several.....

Summary: Eliane Elias Does It Again! 2008-10-06
Comment: "Dreamer" was released 2002 on RCA's Bluebird label and stands as one Elias' best to date. Her amazing piano playing is not really the main focus her like on so many of her recordings, but she does play some great improvisations, though short in length. The string orchestrations are also very well done. Absolutely beautiful.

There are two highlights for me "Call Me" and "A House Is Not A Home." Those two songs are the worth the price of admission, but this is not to say that the whole album isn't great. "Call Me" features some of the lyrical improvisations from Michael Brecker I've ever heard. I'm not a fan of him at all, but am quite shocked to him play with lyricism. He has a great tone on this song as well.

Here's a lineup of all the musicians: Oscar Castro-Neves, Guilherme Monteiro (guitar); Michael Brecker (tenor saxophone); Michael Mainieri(vibraphone); Marc Johnson (bass guitar); and Paulo Braga (drums).

If you're a fan of Eliane Elias, then I would suggest without hesitation to pick up this recording. If you're new to her music, I would start with "Kissed By Nature," "Plays Jobim," or "The Three Americas" first. These are fine introductions to her approach to music and her piano playing.

If you would like to hear her in a big band context, then pickup her collaboration with Bob Brookmeyer called "Impulsive." Highly recommended.

Summary: You will love it! 2008-09-15
Comment: She is like Diana Krall or the gal from Ipanima come to life! I believe she is the lady who orginally sang on Stan Gezts album. Anyway she is amazing and you probably know that already, but if you don't, you won't be dissapointed. The CD is excellent!

I felt very lucky to find Eliane Elias, and you will be too!

Summary: What can I say that hasn't already been said? 2008-03-20
Comment: Just add my five-star rating to the bunch and stamp a big "ditto" on this because everything everyone's saying about this album is true. Soft, seductive, soothing. That's this album.

Summary: Don't just sit there. Buy this. 2007-12-11
Comment: I have seven of her albums and this is her best. This is brilliantly arranged and beautifully accompanied. With Elaine's soft yummy voice and her elegant touch on the keys, she makes an ordinary song extraordinary. I particularly like Call Me, So Nice and That's All, but they are all great. Guys, put this on and you'll have their panties on the lampshade in no time. Enjoy.
