Attended the Mariachi Vargas concert in San Antonio, Texas last December. The opera, Cruzar la Cara de la Luna was mentioned. Some of its background was given by Mariachi Vargas' director, who was contracted to create the music for the opera's story. He presented one of the opera's singers. She performed one of its songs. The audience was wowed! I was thrilled to hear the thunderous applause rendered the performance. Mariachi programs do not showcase such songs. Nor, create this type of musical scores! (Of course, this particular Mariachi is always surprising its fans through its musical program selections.) Anyway, I couldn't get the performance out of my mind. When I got home, I thought I'd check Amazon's extensive music collection to see if the opera had been recorded and was available. To my surprise, I located it and ordered it immediately. Saw this when it premiered in Houston and loved it! This is a beautiful and moving story that explores themes familiar to all of us. The lovely melodic music and lyrics brought tears to my eyes.

Maestro Pepe Martinez did a wonderful job in converting this opera into a masterpiece. His magical touch on every musical note always transports us to an old Mexico when Mexican music was in its purest and finest form. Pepe Martinez has proudly carried the torch and has been faithful to the original Mariachi blueprint following the tradition of another great Maestro Ruben Fuentes. Like Fuentes, Pepe Martinez has effectively led Mariachi Vargas creating and playing the finest Mexican music. For those who don't know, Mariachi Vargas members just like members other Mariachi ensembles like Nati Cano y sus Camperos , Cobre, Nuevo Tecalitlan, Sol De Mexico, and many many others, have classical music background and conservatory education. Mariachi musicians must attain musical education in a conservatory, and carefully hone their skills in many musical instruments before they can even attempt to get a spot in a Mariachi ensemble.
