Product Review

On Brazilian Beat, Putumayo goes indie with a new album that uncovers the roots-influenced contemporary Brazilian music scene. Glittering breakbeats are at home with bouncing berimbaus while rolling Afro-Brazilian rhythms, retro samba soul and velvety bossa nova vocals mesh and groove organically. This is the unstoppable Brazilian Beat. Selected from tens of thousands of songs collected by the pioneering label created to introduce new global music to broad audiences, Brazilian Beat chronicles the vibrant indie scene in Brazil and around the world. Musicians are taking samba, bossa nova, and MPB (Brazilian popular music) and deftly incorporating electronica, soul, funk, and just about every other music imaginable. Sultry or upbeat, the tracks on this compilation of hip, rootsy artists aim to raise listeners moods and introduce even die-hard fans to a new crop of Brazilian music innovators. Featured alongside unsung icons such as samba soul master Marcos Valle are rising new stars like Tita Lima, daughter of the bassist from psychedelic hipster darlings, Os Mutantes.

Putumayo consistently presents the best overviews of Brazilian music for listeners that do not have the time or acumen to seek it out for themselves. Brazilian Beat is another great collection of up tempo songs geared to get the listener up and moving. You should also check out Brazilian Cafe Brazilian Cafe, Acoustic Brazil Acoustic Brazil, and Brazilian Lounge Brazilian Lounge.

"PUTUMAYO PRESENTS: BRAZILIAN BEAT"
(Putumayo, 2012)

This is a good set of mellow, contemporary Brazilectronica club music, featuring a number of newer artists, all in a super-chilled out dance-music mode. The only name I recognize is '60s/'70s bossa modernist Marcos Valle, who has become a champion of this style. I'm more into older stuff myself, but if you are into the style, this is certainly worth checking out. And, like many Putumayo collections, it's likely to help steer you towards a bunch of artists you hadn't heard of before. Check it out! (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Guide To Brazilian Music)

With every CD that Putumayo puts out you can expect it to be of exceptional quality and choice variety. I am always on the lookout for new Putumayo albums so when I saw this one I immediately had to take a listen. Just the short sample appetizers were enough to warrant a purchase. When the CD finally arrived I was in auditory heaven. I have Acoustic Brazil & Brazilian Lounge (both of which I highly recommend) & Brazilian Beat is a perfect compliment to the former albums. Because of the ecclectic variety and a more progressive sound, Brazilian Beat is slightly better, yet no one album should be without the others because each album brings a different flavor to the table. Acoustic Brazil has a soothing, laid back, "seaside cafe" feel to it. Brazilian Lounge has a nice flow to it with a tinge of electronic elements. Brazilian Beat is more up tempo, lays on the electronic elements thick, and throws in a little funk.
I can not say enough about how good this album is! Take a chance on...Read more
