Summary: Manu in Babylon 2007-11-13
Comment: Great video from a great band. The tour video is really interesting, focusing more on the band than Manu himself... or rather, you get Manu from a circular perspective by observing the band in action; this segment is very well done; Then there is a live concert; it's okay. Then Manu's own directorial bit, with an extended music vid featuring lots of snippets of footage... kind of weird, but good in parts; there is good footage of the band playing remote countryside villages in South America. If you're a fan, I can't imagine you wouldn't enjoy this video. There's good philosophizing happening in it too. Punk Cookery, The Punk Rocker's Cafe Cookbook, Vegetarian Specialties

Summary: Insanely great performance 2007-10-19
Comment: Great performance video that really conveys the exhuberant, wild spirit of this band.

I had already heard a CD of much of the same live music (Manu Chao with Radio Bemba Sound System) and was somewhat put off by its chaotic character, despite really enjoying Manu Chao's sort-of-solo albums (Clandestino and Esperanza). Being able to see this band in action made all the difference -- now I love the CD! Despite the seeming chaos this is a great band, possessing excellent muscianship, clearly well rehearsed, and generating a huge sound with an audience reaction to match it. Highly recommended for fans of Mana Negra and/or Manu Chao.

Summary: Que Pasa por la Calle? 2007-06-20
Comment: I have been a Manu Chao fan for many years now, and have had the privelege to have seen him in concert twice, once in San Diego, and more recently in Tijuana. The passion and energy of his music will stay with you for life. His message is one of justice and love for humanity. This is my favorite music DVD by far. It is so honest and fills one up with excitement and envy because to be free like that seems impossible. The abstract documentary which has the llama scene is like a collage of thoughts and expressions running through the mind of this man and those who are with him. One has to understand it for the overall message. To look at it literally will only confuse the viewer. The concert is awesome and gives people a sense of what an experience going to his concert truly is. Watching it on a DVD is one thing, but experiencing it firsthand is entirely different. This is meant to show people what Manu Chao is all about, and hopefully it will draw people to an artist who has the rare ability to enable people to envision a world of peace, justice, and one in which borders are broken down.

Summary: Sheer Magic 2007-05-09
Comment: This is one of the best music concert DVD's I've seen but it so much more than that . With the additional documentaries you get a complete package of Manu Chao footage. I saw them perform in a smaller venue in Tijuana in 2000 so I was curious to see waht the "King of Bongo" was up up to. The groups he has assembled for his tour, Radio Bemba Sound System is the stuff. The high energy and sheer intensity is non-stop throughout the footage. They get into a ska groove that is uptempo and rarely backs off. I actually had to stop it after 20 minutes becasue it was so intense. Anyway the music is great and the action is something to behold. The crowd participation is magical and matching in intensity of the band. Each member of the band creates a beautiful synthesis, inevitably giving way to the diminutive Manu, to cast his spell on the crowd. One of the best moments is when they cut into a song honoring Bob Marley and the chorus and 80,000 people are singing "Bob Marley is in the house" over and over. It was awesome. Watching it was almost as exhilirating as being there. After watching the concert footage be sure to check out the documentaries. Especially entertaining is the behind the scenes footage of their tour where you get insight into what makes the band tick. The other documentary is fortright and shows them in their travels touring and mixing with the indigenous groups of South America. There is some spectacular footage of the Patagonia. All in all this is one not to be missed ,especially if you are a Manu Chao fan. Recently they were at Coachella and I am looking forward to seeing them here in southernmost Cali in June. Que viva Manu Chao! Recommended for world music aficionados.
